Love is the principal theme in Jens Christian Grøndahl?s work, and that is a theme, which no-one in contemporary Danish literature has studied as thoroughly, described as minutely, or given as timely an expression as he has. At the same time, Grøndahl is perhaps Denmark?s most popular novelist who has won important prizes at home and a lot of readers abroad, where he is published in twenty different languages.

In 2002, Grøndahl?s breakthrough novel,

(Silence in October), was nominated for the international IMPAC Dublin prize, while the successor,

(Lucca), made him a name in world literature. Both books are studies of modern love, which in Grøndahl?s literary universe is typically marked by loss and disillusion. They are stories about imperfect lovers, their accidental encounters and fated choices, often told in retrospect by narrators who have moved on from the stories? starting point.

But love still figures as a transcendental force in the books due to Grøndahl?s elegant style, the subtle compositions and evocative portraits, which speak to both the heart and the mind of the reader.

In the novels

(Virginia),

(Another Light), and

(Piazza Bucarest) the intimate love story is cast within a greater, historical framework, which lends political resonance to the narrators? sense of existential exile. The political move of Grøndahl?s late work is a consequence of his activities as a writer

? a position he himself reflects upon in the sociopolitical essays from 1995 and ?98,

(By the Mouth of the River) and

(Night Mail), which were written at a time when Grøndahl was vice president of Danish PEN.

Since his debut in 1985, Grøndahl has edited magazines, published art criticism and dramas, along with a number of experimental novels. But it is his exploration of the love story that has won him international fame and readers all over the world. This is where Grøndahl has put his mark on the literary map.
