DIVA - Artist-in-Residence Program in Denmark

To promote creative exchange between Danish and foreign artists and art institutions, The Danish Arts Council has established an artist-in-residence program in Denmark. The program makes it possible to invite artists from abroad to stay and work in Denmark for extended periods.
The intention is to help build valuable networks for Danish artists, art mediators and art institutions, while at the same time indirectly improving the knowledge of Danish art abroad.
The Danish Arts Council enables individuals or institutions within the Danish art world propose candidate artists from abroad - preferably with a view to working together with the artists during their stay in Denmark on projects such as exhibitions, workshops, public talks, and the like. Based on the proposals submitted, The Danish Arts Council's Committee for International Visual Art will decide whom to invite.
The program provides for a number of artist residencies in as well as outside of Copenhagen. The practical arrangements in connection with the program will be handled by the Danish Arts Agency's Visual Arts Centre.

What the Artists are Offered

Accomodations
In 2007, the program offers 2-4 artist residencies in Copenhagen, ranging from 3-6 months. In Copenhagen, The Visual Arts Centre will be in charge of arranging living space and studios for the artists, who will be accommodated free of charge in a centrally-located apartment made available by the Bikuben Foundation.
The program also allows individuals or institutions outside of Copenhagen to organize one or more artist residencies of 3-6 months duration - perhaps linked to the location in question. To ensure geographical flexibility, the program for residency outside of Copenhagen is not tied to any fixed accommodation. In these cases, it is up to the applying institution or individuals to find accommodations for the artist, subsequently financed by the program within an economic framework agreed upon in advance.

Travel Expenses
The artists' travel expenses to and from Denmark will be covered by the program. When traveling by public transportation, economy class must be used.

Studio Facilities
Both in and outside of Copenhagen, the artists-in-residence are offered studio facilities, depending on their particular needs. In Copenhagen, studio facilities are arranged by The Visual Art Centre as soon as the artist has been granted residency. Outside of Copenhagen, it is up to the institutions/individuals connected with the artist to arrange for studio facilities, subsequently financed by the program within an economic framework agreed upon in advance.

Grants
Each artist receives a grant of 10,000 DKK per month to cover expenses.

Activities in Denmark
During the term of residence in Denmark, the institution or individuals proposing the candidacy of the artist, is the host of the artist and is reponsible for the residency program. The artist is obliged to give a public talk organised by The Visual Arts Centre presenting his or her work. Further on, The Visual Arts Centre contributes to introduce the artists to their Danish colleagues and the Danish visual arts scene.

Criteria for Granting Residency
In its evaluation of proposals for residency in Denmark, The Danish Arts Council's Committee for International Visual Art gives preference to artists who meet a high professional standard and are interested in actively engaging with the Danish art world.
If the applying institution wants to involve the artist in activities such as exhibitions or teaching, this will be viewed as a point in favour.
There are no requirements regarding the artist's age, gender or nationality.
At present, the program does not cover the accommodation or expenses of accompanying family members.

Who May Apply and What is the Procedure
1. Individuals as well as institutions, galleries or other members of the Danish art world may propose artists from abroad for the program.

2. Before a proposal is made, the artist must be contacted to ensure that he or she is interested in and able to accept a residency in Denmark of the proposed duration.
Residency outside Copenhagen furthermore requires securing accommodations and studio facilities for the artist in advance.

3. As the final step, a well-founded proposal must be forwarded by mail, containing the following:

  • a presentation of the artist and his or her artistic work.
  • descriptions of plans you may have for collaborations with the artist (exhibitions, public talks, workshops, or the like).
  • information on when the artist wants to arrive and the term of residence (3-6 months).
  • a budget including travel expenses and - in the case of proposals for residency outside Copenhagen - expenses for the artist's accommodations and studio facilities to be financed by the program.
  • information on how the artist can be contacted.

Deadlines for Proposals and Replies
Proposals for residency during 2007 must be received prior to: 10 October 2006, 16 January 2007, 16 April 2007 and 16 August 2007.
