Biography about Johannes V. Jensen
Johannes Vilhelm Jensen was born 1.20.1873 in Farsø, Himmerland. After taking his General Certificate he moved to Copenhagen to study medicine. In his medical student years he began writing poetry, and especially pulp novels for the magazine Revuen under the pseudonym Ivar Lykke. His real literary debut was with the novel Danskere in 1896, and in the following years Einar Elkær and Himmerlandsfolk were published. His most famous work, the novel Kongens Fald, appeared in 1900, and six years later Digte appeared, which contains the famous poem Interferens. In 1908 Johannes V. Jensen was awarded a Civil List 3-year pension, and in 1909 he was conferred a lifetime pension. He received the title of Honorary Ph.D. at Lund University in 1929, and in 1944 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Johannes V. Jensen died 11.5.1950. Even after his death Johannes V. Jensen is a writer of great import, and in 1999 the novel Kongens Fald was twice acclaimed the Danish novel of the century, in both Politiken’s and
Berlingske Tidende’s polls.
