Biography about William Heinesen
William Heinesen was born on 15 January 1900 on the Faroe Islands. He was sent to Copenhagen in 1916 to attend the School of Commerce, but he became an author instead. His first book was a volume of poetry Arktiske elegier (Arctic Elegies) from 1921. Besides his work as an author Heinesen also worked as an artist doing numerous book covers and paper collages. In 1961 he became a member of the Danish Academy. William Heinesen died on 12 March 1991.
