Biography about Thorkild Bjørnvig
Thorkild Bjørnvig was born on 2 February 1918 in Aarhus. In 1947 he completed his MA in Comparative Literature at Aarhus University with study trips to Paris, Bonn, Uppsala, and Rome. In 1964 he became Doctor of Philosophy at Aarhus University. His literary début was a volume of poems, Stjænen bag Gavlen (The Star behind the Gable), in 1947 and since then he has worked with an interplay between writing poetry and essays and his literary studies. Abroad he is known for his memoir about his friendship with Karen Blixen, Pagten (The Pact), which has been translated into several languages. Besides exercising his own poetry, Bjørnvig has also been co-founder and co-editor of the literary journal Heretica (1948-50) and has translated Hölderlin, Poe, and Nietzsche among others. Since 1960 Bjørnvig has been a member of The Danish Academy. In 1979 he became honorary doctor at the University of Lund, Sweden. Thorkild Bjørnvig passed away March 5th, 2004.
