Biography about Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen was born 4.2.1805 in Odense. In 1819 he journeyed to Copenhagen with the aim of making a career at The Royal Theater. In acknowledgement of his efforts as a writer of plays he was granted a royal subsidy so that he could go to Latin school. His career in print began in 1829 with the ironic legend novel Fodreise. Today he is known primarily for his many fairy tales, although the plays, poems and novels perhaps accounted for more as regards his own literary ambitions. And it was the novels which formed the basis for Andersen’s international reputation. His innumerable travels in and outside the country and his travel books testify to a great longing for foreign places. In 1838 he was placed on the Civil List with a regular annual pension, which several times was increased. In 1867 he was named an honorary citizen of Odense. Hans Christian Andersen died 8.4.1875.
