Reviews about Kirsten Thorup

On Baby
... Kirsten Thorup has written probably the most gripping book in the present book season. Its title is Baby, but it is a very adult book. (...) Baby is a deeply despairing book, but with an inspiring message. It is a book of tremendous format.

On Heaven and Hell
Actually this is an occasion for flag flying. This book is an event in Danish literature. Here is the long awaited renewal of the big epic novel. Sensational, sovereign. A fabulous, luxuriant and dynamic story with a Dickensian gallery of characters. (...) But what makes Himmel og helvede (Heaven and Hell) so extraordinary is the inner tension which ties the many sequences together and makes the characters living and relevant. It is a tremendous novel, phenomenally moving and with a colossal power in the language. It’s novel you read without sensing time and place, and at the same time with a blissful feeling of being present at the birth of a classic.

On Beloved Unknown
Kirsten Thorup’s eye for the play of power in metaphysical relations is keen, and her ability for describing confinement, dependency and hollow authority is unsurpassed. (…) This forceful novel was written with an artist’s energy and a craftsman’s thoroughness, which promisese well for the work’s durability.

Marie Teztlaff in Weekendavisen, 18 March 1994
