Reviews about Thorkild Bjørnvig

On The Star behind the Gable
Finally, Thorkild Bjørnvig debuts with the surprise of the year in poetry. (. . .) The Star Behind the Gable is not only what one would call skilful. It is full of skill. This man is a lyric poet and an artist of the word. His debut is a triumph for him and a boon to Danish poetry. (. . .) This is a very promising debut.

Emil Frederiksen in Berlingske Aftenavis, 18 December 1947

On Anubis
Here is a master of the art of verse, here is poetry in consummate form. The author has a rare gift of making language resound, the meaning seems to be carried along by waves of nuance and atmosphere created by the rhythm and music of the words, which lifts this collection of poems far above the ordinary. (. . .) One is not easily done with these poems. They move restlessly about in the back of the reader´s mind. These poems have an afterlife, as all really fine poetry does.

Huulgaard Mikkelsen in Randers Dagblad, 2 January 1956

On Anubis
The title poem (...) [is] strong, vital, and restrained, in spite of the dark implications of the title. The twenty-two other poems in this book are based on a variety of themes, many of them from nature, but all of them reveal the same inspiration and formal qualities that have already won the young poet a permanent place in Danish literature.

Lawrence S. Thompson in Books Abroad, winter of 1957

On Water, Rushes and the Moon
(. . .) If you have followed and admired him from the beginning, as I have (. . .), it is a tremendous pleasure to read this new book, whose 28 poems display the same mastery of craft … (. . .) Water, Rushes and the Moon is an incredibly beautiful book, written with a masterly hand.

Poul Borum in Ekstra Bladet, 3 February 1993

On Water, Rushes and the Moon
This is not a lengthy collection of poems, but, rather, droplets of sublime beauty. (. . .) Working with his memoirs over the past number of years must have given Bjørnvig this unparalleled poetic perspective. (. . .) This book is not only the unexpected gift of age to the poet´s self – it is, in reality, a gift, a reward to us all. This is how good poetry can be.

Bo Hakon Jørgensen in Kristeligt Dagblad, 2 February 1993

On Water, Rushes and the Moon
A volume of Bjørnvig´s poetry in English (...) was published in 1993 as The World Tree (...). Will that translation bring about Bjørnvig´s international breakthrough and recognition as a great European poet, one who has succeeded in capturing whatever there is to say about life, art, death and eternity, crystallized in poems of impeccable, indeed timeless quality?

Sven H. Rossel in World Literature Today, spring of 1995
