With her restlessness and lust for adventure, Barbara is not evil, but comes to do evil. She is one of Danish literature's most intricately-drawn characters. At the same time, it is a story of a doomed, tragic attempt to break out of the mental straightjacket of a confined community. A classic.

Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen never quite finished the novel. His friend and colleague William Heinesen filled in some of the textual lacunae in the closing chapter. But this does not affect the novel's status as a masterpiece that continues to be one of the most fascinating, stimulating, caustic and beautifully-written Danish works imaginable.

Barbara was published in September and before the year was out, it had been reprinted seven times and sold 20,000 copies. Today, when you throw yourself into a copy of the book's fourth Danish edition, you are overwhelmed by how contemporary Barbara is.
Jacobsen writes in almost filmic sequences with whimsy and irony, steamy eroticism and philosophical wisdom, with intimate, richly-faceted character portrayals.
