Excerpts from
The Worst and the Best
By Søren Ulrik Thomsen
The best is rainy weather in movies
music in a taxi
and handwritten letters with cancellations all
over crimson stamps from far away
words like comely, cyclone and KwaZulu-Natal
are the best
the best thing I got for my twelfth birthday
was a pair of so-called scooter boots
with fire-red uppers and side zippers
and that I still grow happy at the mere thought
of thrusting my feet into them --
that’s the best
a crackling fresh-printed newspaper in an utterly foreign language
where I almost understand an occasional word
rock in the sounding darkness of the text
like hawthorn blossomson a May night
is the best
the best is when you close your hand
your cool, freckled hand
around my cock
and plant it in the middle of the world:
That’s the best for me.
