Excerpts from
The White House
By Herman Bang
There was a white house and inside the house the wall-coverings were pale.
All the doors were left open, in the winter too, when the woodfires were lit.
Amongst the pieces of mahogany furniture were marble-topped tables and white consoles which had come from Augustenborg, from the castle, bought at auction. The old portraits were adorned with everlasting flowers and there were many Epheu, because the mistress loved them with their way of twining themselves up a pale wall.
The room leading onto the garden was so white it almost shimmered.
The children loved this room and then the garden steps where they slid down the white-painted banisters.
