Excerpts from
On Foot to the Northern Parts of Mors
By Knud Sørensen
The boy skipping stones
It's not easy to find the right
stone (he said). It has to be round as a
five crown piece but thicker in the middle (he showed). It
must be grey-blue and completely smooth. When you
find that stone you have to rinse it at the edge of the
water and go and warm it in your hand
for a few minutes. And this is important (like so) and the way your arm moves
is important (like so) but your first finger is only used to make the stone go
round. If it's the right stone
and you throw it right and there aren't any
wrong waves or wrong wind
the stone will carry on out across the fjord
until you can't see it any more.
Then it will go to the bottom. Out there on the bottom
between Mors and Fur
there's a mountain of fine, grey-blue
skipping stones. He said:
I'd give a lot
to get
those stones back.
