Excerpts from
Fairy-Tales
By Klaus Høeck
there once
was a
little girl who
wanted to find herself
”are you there?” – she called
in the woods where
the elder was
flowering like never before
“are you here?” – she called
to her own
heart “are you there?”
“are you here?” – the echo re
peated and made a fool of her
then the girl got the idea
that perhaps it was
her shadow that real
ly was herself – it
followed her after all where
she went and stood
for a long time the girl observed
her shadow – but the night
came without stars
and her shadow dis
appeared – and she couldn’t after all
only be herself in the daytime
but the little girl didn’t
give up – she
reached a lake in the woods
in which she saw herself
oh there she was
there she
really was – but
the sun switched off the picture
and the wind e
rased it
so only the skin’s
pale lace remained
in the end the girl looked
into her beloved’s
eyes – in there she
had to be found among the
blue larksputs
but her
beloved closed his
eyes for a brief moment
and immediately she
disappeared among
other dreams she didn’t
know and couldn’t see
